SEE YOU LATER- Horror short by Katy Lopaschuk

 SEE YOU LATER

How I Found It

I had recently come across a young filmmaker’s TikTok, where she announced her new horror short film on her Youtube channel. Her channel name is KatyJoyFilms and her real name is Katy Lopaschuk. On her channel she has a few videos about her life as a film student and a few well shot nature videos. However, the horror short that I watched was called, “SEE YOU SOON”.

Summary

The short starts out with a text thread between the main character, Jane, and her ex. This sets up the audience to think he will become the source of horror. The conversation is interrupted when Jane hears a package arrive that is addressed to her. Jane pulled out an old school tv. Clips of a girl with black hair show up on the screen. As she is watching in curiosity, she receives a text from “Jason” who seems to have made plans to meet her that night. Jane gets ready and hears a few suspicious sounds. As she is about to leave she notices the tv has been moved. The girl with the black hair appears and is being attacked. The footage switches to Jane in real time and she realizes she is being watched. The short ends with the camera on its side and the violent sounds of stabs and screams.

Opinion

I liked this short because it brings to life a real fear of many women. There is always a scary feeling about meeting someone online or the thought of being stalked. Like we have learned in previous classes, horror can express real life worries in extremely creative ways. In “SEE YOU SOON” the idea that relationships with men can be dangerous even if there are no previous red flags. I also really liked how Katy made the audience believe that it would be her ex boyfriend that would be creepy to her, but instead it was the seemingly sweet one. Thus, leaving us with a feeling of being unsafe. Even in her own home he was lurking and planning his act of violence. A home is a perfect low budget location for a short like this and it also enhanced the message of the film.

I admire Katy Lopaschuk because she created this short film completely by herself. The camera work was well done and she included a variety of shots. My favorite angle was one where she was getting ready in the mirror but the camera was behind a part of the door frame and behind her back. It gave the effect that someone was peering in. You could tell she put a lot of thought into the details of her short. She used Foley to add the sound of her heels clicking and every door that squeaked. The tv prop that was used was also a unique detail that was included tastefully. This was Katy Lopaschuk’s first horror short, but I just learned that she is working on a sci-fi short film currently. For a very low budget horror short, I thought, “SEE YOU SOON” was done well. I think Katy has a very creative mind and I look forward to seeing more from her.
